For instance, it would be possible for selection of a profile with such

curves for you
on the Mac OS today. Imagine having a printer profile simplify your
settings,
instead of complicating them.
It's a nice idea in theory. But in practice we can't even get two of
the parties (driver vendors and Apple) to utilize existing methods with
any rationality. Examples:
1. The theory behind ColorSync in OS X is that a device registers
multiple device modes (for different media). Each get its own ID. When
the driver settings are set in a certain way, the driver selects the
resulting Profile ID which points to a particular device mode in the
ColorSync Utility. If you have a custom profile selected, then it
should get used.
Well it hasn't worked for me yet, and it appears to be a problem with
how the print driver is written, but maybe there is some OS bug
involved as well.
2. Print windows in OS X have presets. They're sticky settings in that
once you use a preset, the next time you bring up the print window that
preset is still selected. But the driver settings come up in their
default settings! You have to select the preset manually (even though
it appears to already be selected) in order for the settings to get
set.
2b. Even though I've created the preset for a 2200, the preset is
selectable when I'm using a laser printer. That makes no sense.
Both of these "features" have had this behavior since they were
introduced, and still behave in a non-intuitive, half-broken, manner.
And those are just examples of existing features that don't work
correctly. There are also existing features that work as designed, but
the design is flawed.
So I'm not convinced that adding yet more features that don't work, or
don't work correctly is a good solution.
