Knobs and buttons that set a device to a certain operating
mode, in a perfectly repeatable fashion, I'd call configuration.
Calibration is setting something that alters the objective
result (as measured by an instrument), in a manner such that
the response meets a particular target.
I was using the word "calibration" to state that a device is set up (with
any possible settings/configurations via hard- and or software) to a
known condition where the biggest dynamic range of the device is possible
and the response of that device is stable. If -- in the case of a display
-- a specific color temperature (in the white and grayes to ensure a good
graybalance) or gamma/L*-function is needed or wanted can be discussed.
I'd tend to call that configuration if it's open ended (no instrument
needed to check that the settings), and calibration if an instrument
is needed to actually determine the settings needed.
