It would be nice if files evaporated after

archived images are usually picked up from jobs that were prepped for
press - sometimes years ago, sometimes from an overseas office, etc.

Yes, but only you and the printer know for sure. What about the rest
of the
planet?
You're going WAY beyond the scope of the scenario in which I suggested
a preference for submitting an untagged file. All of my archived files
internally are tagged. Sometimes they get delivered that way. Often
CMYK files are delivered without. If I'm really concerned about the
rest of the planet then sure I either embed a profile or provide some
other sort of documentation of how the files were prepped. That's NOT
the scenario I'm discussing. I'm talking about sending files to a
specific vendor for a specific job.... not throwing files into the
public domain for God only knows what use. If I really were to want to
do that its not CMYK prepped for a specific output that I'd be throwing
out there. If someone's trying to make a Duratrans from a file I
prepped specifically for print without coming back to me then they get
what they deserve. If I sell an image with the intent of using it for
multiple types of output, I deliver a file (or more probably multiple
versions of a file) suitable for repurposing, not a single untagged
CMYK file.
