Or so they wish in their undying dreams of world domination...
I wouldn't pooh-pooh it too much, they do have respected color
people working on it. The general model is one that actually
tackles problems like gamut mapping in a way that ICC currently
doesn't. Last time I looked, they were certainly promising interoperability
with ICC V4. Whether it works as well as MS will claim it works,
of course remains to be seen.
I was at the Munsell Color Science Lab in Rochester last June, and, when
asked, the very people who are perfecting the CIECAM model (Mark Fairchild,
in particular) specifically said that CIECAM is still in the research phase
and NOT ready for the consumer market.
CIECAM has been made use of for the past couple of years. Like any
research topic, it's never "finished", it just keeps getting refined.
There was CIECAM97, and now there's CIECAM02. Maybe there'll be
a CIECAM08. I notice the CIC13 has a tutorial on using CIECAM02 - see
page 4 of <www.imaging.org/conferences/cic13/CIC13_Preliminary_Program.pdf>.
I've certainly been happily using it for quite a while to do gamut mapping in.
It will probably trickle into more commercial application right about the
time MS releases their WCS ...
Or maybe they lied to me because they were working for Microsoft all along
and were prohibited from revealing that by a binding NDA...
It's well known who is working on WCS, Michael Bourgoin and Michael Stokes
(amongst others, one presumes.) In the past, Michael Stokes chaired the ICC,
while Michael Bourgoin represented Adobe at it.
