Hi Karl,
nice to read your comments,
you wrote:
There are several aspects that should be reflected in the name and they
should not be mixed (ECI and HDM are two different animals):
- Who created the profile (organization, company, individual), e.g. ECI
- Which profiling software was used, e.g. X-Rite
- Dataset on which the profile is based, e.g. fogra39
- Standard that is being met, e.g. ISO 12647-2
- Type of stock, e.g. coated
I want to amend:
- TIL
- black composition options
- Gamut Mapping options
The name will have to be abbreviated somehow;
ECI_HDM_FOGRA39_ISO_12647-2_coated is definitely too long and unwieldy –
any suggestions?
... now the name is *definitely* too long or completely cryptic ;-)
There are already some useful tags and header fields in ICC profiles
besides the description tag (e.g. manufacturer, model and copyright) and
with Apples the ColorSync Utility you are just one click away to
read/use them. Somethig similar would indeed look pretty e.g. in Bridge
CS3 or Adobes profile related dialog fields. Almost every manufacturer
uses custom tags to encode his Separation and Gamut mapping options, but
it's nearly impossible to compare or describe them vendor independent
(at least as long there is no common standard for gamut mapping or black
generation).
[...] And, Klaus, I
don´t think it is too late – the ECI profiles are not published yet, and
even an existing profile can be renamed easily ;-)
but *don't do this at home* with profiles someone else released! ;-)
The idea of an additional tag for the dataset is great, but that´ll take
time. Grouping profiles with a folder structure in applications like
Photoshop could be easier and faster (hey, Adobe – CS3 ???)
... maybe this should be realized on operating system level so that all
applications can benefit (I hate paths like "/Library/Application
Support/Adobe/Color/Profiles" and usually put an alias to it into
"/Library/ColorSync/Profiles" or "~/Library/ColorSync/Profiles"
Regards, Klaus
