I doubt I can contribute much to this conversation from a technical point of
view. I found the post I copied here very interesting - as well as the
follow-up here. I do have some questions re bandwidth and the current DVI
connection. Is DVI bandwidth an issue? I'm sure it would be nice to have a
complete 16bit pipe but is the connection a constraint? Same issue with
higher bit depth colour and HDTV? I'm aware of the new UDI interface being
worked on but details seem sketchy....
DVI has two 24 bit streams on each interface, so it could be used
for > 8 bits/component, but it also appears to be a provision for higher
bandwidth for high resolution & high refresh rates. Information on what
particular displays or display cards actually do, seems to be scant. I
could find no real technical information on the NVidia based card in
my current system either with the card, or on the manufacturers or NVidia's
website.
I would expect that the analog outputs of most high end VGA cards would
be > 8 bits/component, so connected to a CRT based display, this might well
give better results than the DVI interface to many LCD displays.
