It comes down to the intent used in creating the device link. Using a colorimetric intent (good for proofing), the extra gamut won't be used. If you use a saturation intent to create a device link, then this should expand the colorspace. For instance Argyll collink supports a wide range of intents including saturation (see -G and -ims), and can (to a degree) retain K inking with the right options (ie. see -kt and -fk).
