Klauss,

It's a shame that ColorChecker doesn't come with the reference file or at least a download URL as the target is virtually useless without it.

You can have a very good idea of the ColorChecker values in the various files I provide freely here:
http://www.babelcolor.com/main_level/ColorChecker.htm#ColorChecker_data

The spreadsheet file there gives you the average and standard deviation from 20 charts.

This average file gives very good results when you do not have the chance to measure the actual target.

If you buy one, you can't actually use it for what it is purported to
be intended for, without also buying some other X-Rite product.

INAL, but I think the end user is not legally obligated to *buy*
ProfileMaker or the like to use the reference files -- he can just
download and install PM and use e.g. PM's MeasureTool (in demo mode) to
export at least D50/2° Lab values. Or he can use the spectral reference file directly with other profiling tools. It's inconvenient, but I guess it's legal.

But of course one must not *distribute* the reference file without
XRite's permission.

It's a shame that ColorChecker doesn't come with the reference file or at least a download URL as the target is virtually useless without it.

Klaus
