If you buy one, you can't actually use it for what it is purported to
be intended for, without also buying some other X-Rite product.
INAL, but I think the end user is not legally obligated to *buy*
ProfileMaker or the like to use the reference files -- he can just
download and install PM and use e.g. PM's MeasureTool (in demo mode) to
export at least D50/2° Lab values. Or he can use the spectral reference
file directly with other profiling tools. It's inconvenient, but I guess
it's legal.
But of course one must not *distribute* the reference file without
XRite's permission.
It's a shame that ColorChecker doesn't come with the reference file or
at least a download URL as the target is virtually useless without it.
