as UDACT whilst recommending luminance of at least 120cd/m2 also suggests D50/160cd/m2/L*. My feeling is that the 160 luminance is partially to offset the D50? But in my clients case we are not comparing to a viewing booth directly, so up to now I have been calibrating to D65/120/gamma2.2.

Guys, when selecting a gamma (or tone curve) for calibration the most important consideration is what your workspace of choice is.
If you calibrate to L* and use Adobe RGB as you workspace, the graphics card lut will steal about 20% of your levels, if you calibrate to Gamma 1.8 (and use Adobe RGB) you loose around 10%...

L* is fantastic as long as you use ECI RGB v2 or another L* based workspace.
If you use ECI RGB v1, Apple RGB or ColorMatch, you need gamma 1.8,
if you use Adobe RGB(1998) or sRGB, it's gamma 2.2.
