A cool feature of the Pentax K20D (and presumably K7) is the ability to simultaneously get a low-rez in-camera JPEG (down to 2mp) alongside the full-rez 15mp DNG file. I use the 2mp JPEGs to quickly put up a "proof" photo gallery for a client while I go to work on the DNGs. I always mention the JPEGs are not for color, just "content".

The problem with the plus JPEG for many is the rendering is so different. Adobe got us closer by producing DNG profiles (more like “look profiles”) and an editor that attempt to mimic the in-camera proprietary rendering. Close in some cases, not always in others.

If you quickly spin off JPEGs from the raw, they match. But for some, JPEG only is necessary for speed of delivery. And the camera manufactures do work hard to produce pleasing in-camera rendering. In the end, for the photographer, its much like choosing a transparency film based on its look vs. shooting a neg and rendering the print in the darkroom.
