In reading this I wonder about the mechanism that might best provide an "off" switch for printing.
While I don't understand all the complexities of the printing mechanisms in OS X, one thing comes to mind. A mechanism to "turn it all off" might have to be "out of band" of the existing print stream. As a result it becomes a much more complicated feature to implement and could explain the reluctance of Apple to make such a change. Add to that the relatively small user base served by such a change and I can see why it might never get implemented. (from their possible perspective)
If we were presented with such an option we would likely try exhausting other choices (like the brittle null-transform method or the more heavy-handed deviceRGB "banning" you mentioned).
just thinking out loud here.
Oh, and also, I totally agree - we need a real solution. Thanks Chris, for your tireless explanations.
