This will result in a malfunctioning printing state, e.g., print jobs not completing, the print is very dark, or an obvious color cast. The "solution" in this case is to completely uninstall the Epson driver, then re-download the driver & common updater, and install them both (make sure to do this after the OS X update). It may be a hassle, but it also works.

I could understand the profiles being an issue if the targets were printed using different setups but in this case the workflow was:
PPC Mac running 10.5 uses the SpectroProofer utility to run a colour target to the 9900 and measure it.
The data is dumped on to a PC and the profile is made in ProfileMaker 5.
The initial prints are made using Photoshop CS4 on the same Mac using Photoshop to do the colour conversion when printing. They look good.
Today's prints were the same images converted in Photoshop CS5 on an Intel Mac Pro running 10.6 and a freshly installed Epson 9900 driver released in October this year.
The print driver, profile and images were only loaded on to the Mac Pro today -- there have been no OS upgrades to clobber the existing setups -- yet the resulting images are noticeably different...
If the same utility is producing different colour target values dependent on the OS then that is shocking a shocking state of affairs :(
