Doesn't this link to this old thread (2004) about why OS X would not
use sRGB for untagged data?
http://lists.apple.com/archives/colorsync-users/2004/Jun/msg00275.html
Whatever the reasons, it does not seem like, in that thread, Zimmerman
(not at Apple anymore, it seems) managed to help anyone in the thread
understand.

According to Zimmerman (thus, at the time, at least), OS X assumed
untagged data to be in Apple's own Generic RGB color space, but that
did not match observations by some of the other participants, who
believe it to be the display profile's color space, just like John
Gnaegy said.
Apple purportedly changed default gamma from 1.8 to 2.2 since 10.6, in
the spirit, I would guess, on bridging the gap of how colors appear in
Mac vs non-Macs, but it still remains a mystery, to me, what happens
to untagged data, and why sRGB is not the least worse of the
assumptions.
