Well this has been an interesting discussion to watch, and to participate in to some extent, but it occurs to me that overall, everyone here is missing something.
And that is that everyone here lives, loves and breathes color, and color management.
And I think for that reason, most people here tend to gravitate towards and stay in those segments of the reprographic industry that live, love and breathe color management as well.
But the fact is that tat's far and away not the norm. Most people in this industry to this day are intimidated by color management, and many of them are convinced its some kind of fiendish plot. (I'm only joking a little.) And if you start talking to them too much about color spaces or SWOP, or Gracol, or this RGB or that RGB, their eyes are going to glaze over and you're going to lose them pretty quickly.
And this includes, many, many, many small and mid-sized print shop operators. And you can to go just about any of their websites and click on their FAQs, or their file submission guidelines, and they'll invariably say they want you to send them CMYK.
Actually, they don't even have to be all that small.

"Any image you create on your computer should be created in CMYK mode. This will ensure that the colors you see on-screen will most closely match the final printed product. If you create your document in RGB, the colors in your printed product may vary slightly: many of the bright values produced by your monitor cannot be exactly reproduced in print."
And there's only one reason they all do this. And that's because at some point in the past, they've all be burned by someone who sent them a file in RGB, got back a muddy mess, and pissed and moaned about it. So they say convert to CMYK, and that way they know the buyer is going to see the conversion on their screen first.
And the fact is in most cases, these guys probably aren't any more aware than the buyer what SWOPv2 is, or that they just converted to it. To them, it's simply CMYK.
But, I'm sorry, the thing is:
So what?
We're not talking artwork here. We're not talking annual reports or branding campaigns or packaging. We're talking schlocky business cards, or some real estate agent running off 500 flyers about a tract house.
That's what defaults are for. And frankly, most of these guys print poorly enough that a larger gamut default than SWOP might just put them in the same place as sRGB.
I've called on plenty of these guys in my lifetime. All of them have said their color is plenty good enough for their clients. So I'm cool with that.
Mike
