I think it is really great, when vendor library documentation actually tells you *everything* you need to know about using the code.

Many moons ago, I was responsible for the entire fleet of network interface drivers that are provided by Wind River, in the VxWorks product. The existing docs were very terse, and I started an effort to actually detail the resource usage and thread behavior of each driver, including memory allocation behavior, semaphores allocated, etc. This stuff was used in some very constrained environments, and the customers really appreciated getting these details up front!

However, what happens is it becomes a big maintenance effort, to keep that extra information correct from release to release. Also, some of those details get too technical for the typical QA department to verify, so there was an "error hole".

I've done a whole bunch of memory leak related work, so I've come to expect that vendor code will grab memory and hang onto it, and release it, in patterns that are not always obvious to the outside observer. Thus, even though I love thorough documentation, I cannot say I agree that Apple should be expected to be providing us this information, for HAL, or any other of their frameworks.
