I believe that "SB Tech" is correct in his use of the term "DAC."
The only requirement for that terminology is that there be digital
input and analog output, with conversion that correlates the two.
USB is most certainly a digital data stream, so a USB-DAC is a valid
subcategory of DAC.
i don't know the device he is using. my point was merely a gamble on
the notion that he probably/possibly has a box that is *more* than
just a DAC. it is a gamble, and i could be wrong.

He mentioned "audiophile" (who will refer to their device as "the DAC" -
equivalent to a soundcard designed to look good next to the aspidistra)
and Beresford. There appears to be only one relevant product from them,
in effect a digital interface/preamp:
http://www.beresford.me/PP/Caiman__DAC.html
This indicates the USB input is via the PCM2902 (a 16/48 device as used
in many budget soundcards), which supports standard HID volume up/down
and mute, possibly in this case controlled solely from the device front
panel Volume control, or otherwise internally strapped to 0dB. The
product description is somewhat lacking in detail, making a more helpful
level of comment difficult.
