I dunno much about patents, but I think patents are a way to leave a
mark in history. Just that people confuse that to lave a mark (read as
"leave millions of $$ " ) in the bank account.

Patents should be a way to protect yourself from having to compete
against your own invention in a commercial market. Ie. Patents
should exist for the purpose of protection from direct competition

value in your IP in some way.
I'm not sure you understand patents. Patents are reward for *full
disclosure*. They are the reward for sharing your secret sauce so
other can build ideas on top of it and you get a monopoly for that
for a limited time. If the net benefit for society of this is
smaller than if you had held your idea closed then they are harmful,
impede commerce and innovation and should be dealt away with.
