(This comes from a person who provides technical support for a living,
at my school and elsewhere)
First. I love virtual desktops. I use them on my linux boxes and I use
(sometimes) the haxies which sort of give me this functionality under
OS X. That said now, there are some caveats.
Virtual desktops are an excellent tool for power users. It is,
however, not for a majority of users. This leads one to say, ok, I
agree with that, how about a preference that lets me turn it on, let it
be off by default. There are already many features in OS X which are
off by default, but which, through natural human curiosity, cause
substantial problems to EU.
Examples:
Accessibility under OS X. I field soo many calls where people turn
this "feature" on, and then freak. Who do they call? Me.
Apache: People read a little of the 'net, tweak out their httpd.conf
file, and 2 things happen. 1) after the tweaks, web sharing will not
start. 2) after an update web-sharing will not start. They call for
help.
Believe me, it goes on and on......
This leads me to think that Apple, who provides support for these
products, would have to field calls and answer questions as well.
Average EU have enough trouble remembering where their default download
folder is, let alone what desktop did they leave X application or Y
file etc...
Just my 2 cents. Remember this is, to an extent, at this time, UNIX for
the masses.
Maybe it will change. Hell, I would love to see an OS X "Power user"
distribution.
With X11 pre-installed, dev tools pre-installed, all directories
visible (although maybe not accessible). Tweakable etc.....
Anyway,

Yes, but there is a problem (noted, I think, in a previous posting):
if you set up X11 with CodeTek and go back and forth between
workspaces, you find that you can not make your various xwindows
active by clicking on them. I think there was a post that you
COULD make them active by toggling through windows with some kind of
command-key sequence, but I'm not recalling what it is.
Don't know if the fault is with X11 or CodeTek.
The fault is with Apple's X11 server, here's a quote from Codetek's
website (I
have posted this previously):
Codetek's workspace pager is pretty good. The problem is as noted in
several
posts that the standard move events are ignored by both Apple's X11
server
and XDarwin. The result is that X11 windows behave as expected (and
appear
in an allocated workspace) and can be moved around under X11, but if
X11
windows are moved in the pager, there is confusion as to where they
actually
are: the X11 server believes they are where they were before they were
moved
in the pager.
If Apple are listening please take note of the pleas for integrated
virtual
desktops throughout MacOS X. If that is too low a priority, at least
ensure
that the X11 server co-works with Codetek's offering. I would have
thought
thsat that was relatively straightforward.
How do people work without virtual desktops??????
