John,
I was trying the xterm tectronics pane testing on an Intel Mac Pro.
Interestingly, then I try the same thing on a PPC PowerBook 15, I get
the open squares instead of characters as you described. I'm not sure
why they are giving two different answers (I don't have a third system
to to see other trends).
So, are you on PPC or Intel?

The default xterm fonts are specified in the /usr/X11/lib/X11/app-
defaults/XTerm file (unless you've overridden it with a local
resource file). It looks to me like the default file (which is the
one I'm using) points at fonts in /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/misc. The
default font path that X11 is using on my system from xset -q is:
Font Path:
/usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/misc/,/usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/,/usr/X11/
lib/X11/fonts/OTF,/usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/,/usr/X11/lib/X11/
fonts/100dpi/,/usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/,/Library/Fonts,/System/
Library/Fonts
I don't know if MacPorts is changing your font path in a way that
makes the default xterm not work (a way around that might be to put
the font resources into a local override file, but it sounds like
you may have already been trying that).

That's interesting, Merle. I also thought it was a font problem. I
tried 2.1.3 version with and without my .Xdefaults (where I set
fonts) and the tek mode does not work, which could indicate a
missing font. But why would I be missing fonts if you have them?
Why does Macports compile work? Does it use a different set of fonts?

It works fine for me using the 2.1.3 release. Switched to the
tektronix mode and the type was fine using any of the tektronix font
sizes selectable from within xterm. Usually when characters show up
as little open squares, it may mean that you are missing the font
that
it wants (or the program you're running is requesting a font that he
tektronix pane can't display).
I don't use xterm much and the tek pane almost never so I didn't test
it exhaustively.
