John,

I was trying the xterm tectronics pane testing on an Intel Mac Pro. Interestingly, then I try the same thing on a PPC PowerBook 15, I get the open squares instead of characters as you described. I'm not sure why they are giving two different answers (I don't have a third system to to see other trends).

So, are you on PPC or Intel?

I did some tests with various combinations of xterm executables from Leopard, Tiger, and even an old one from Panther, and with various X servers. The result is very strange:

- It does not matter which xterm executable you use (I ran various
Leopard versions, a Tiger version, and I ran even a Panther ppc xterm
version "XFree86 4.2.99.903(174)" under Leopard/intel.)

- It does not matter which X server you run (I tested Leopard/intel,
both raw Leopard and version 2.1.2, as well as Leopard/ppc and
Tiger/ppc; I don't have access to Tiger/intel).

- It does not matter whether the xterm executable runs on the same
machine as the X server or remotely via ssh.

- The only thing that counts is *on which architecture your xterm
executable is running*.

If it runs on intel (Leopard), the characters in the Tek window are OK,
if it runs on ppc (Leopard or Tiger), you get the empty squares. If it
runs on Linux (intel), the characters are OK, too.

Weird.
