I know, and I wasn't disputing the opinions of the folks inside X.org.
And I'm also not faulting you guys for lack of effort, by any means,
or claiming that xmkmf/Imake isn't crufty old stuff that deserves to
disappear. I'm just saying that the Martin Costabels of the world
have a point, even if they might make it somewhat more energetically
than is strictly warranted.

Fair enough. Which is why I suggested my compromise above. Assuming
there is already some built-in mechanism to determine the X11
installation paths - via pkgconfig or whatever - it might be a
relatively small amount of work to provide an xmkmf-workalike
front-end to that mechanism, where "workalike" is limited to "works
well enough for GNU autoconf". I admit I haven't looked into it, but
it seems like it might be no more than a few echo/pkgconfig lines with
output redirected to Makefile.
