I know, and I wasn't disputing the opinions of the folks inside X.org.
And I'm also not faulting you guys for lack of effort, by any means,
or claiming that xmkmf/Imake isn't crufty old stuff that deserves to
disappear. I'm just saying that the Martin Costabels of the world
have a point, even if they might make it somewhat more energetically
than is strictly warranted.
Well, should I try to write up how many hours I have spent debugging
packages that don't build because of the missing xmkmf and trying to
find out how to make them work regardless? Plus the time I spent making
a Fink package for xmkmf so that the projects that do use xmkmf/imake
beyond just detecting the X11 installation will be able to build (and
there still exist quite a few heavy-weight packages that depend in an
essential wasy on xmkmf/imake)? Plus the time explaining to frustrated
users why their build process crashes? Plus the time explaining to
fellow developers who haven't yet installed the xquartz update why one
should deal with an X11 sans xmkmf? And I am not alone; there are many
others wasting time with this problem.
By the way, making a Fink package for xmkmf was surprisingly simple,
because despite xmkmf being "broken and dead", it is still distributed
with the latest x.org sources.
And despite xmkmf being "broken" and unmaintainable, it is still
distributed with the latest released version of Mac OS X.
