I'm sure there are a number of Linux systems that continue to ship the bits themselves because it's just as easy to do so as not. Where the Linux folks have a distinct advantage, however, is in the number of people willing to keep those bits current and relevant. We, on the other hand, have one Intern working part-time and n volunteers, where n may now be zero - I haven't seen anything recently to suggest otherwise.
To this mere user, that explains a lot.
I'm now an ex-Apple user (gave my Macbook to a friend, though I might
more logically have inflicted it on an enemy) due to complete and
utter frustration with Leopard (Worst Window Management Ever, dethroning Tiger) which was
compounded by disappointment that I couldn't get X11 to work as it did
in Tiger, and by the fact that both BootCamp and diskutil refused to
let me resize my partitions so I could at least put a sane operating
system on there.
Not even Windows has ever put me through such hassles.
I appreciate everyone's efforts to give people like me an alternative. Good luck.
For what it's worth, you kept me using my Macbook longer than I would have otherwise, and I learned a lot. Apple won't, however, be getting any more of my money for hardware or software, ever.
