What happened? A software update! When I was on 10.5.4, everything I need was
working fine. Updated iTunes, a Security update Monday, still no serious
problems. Tuesday, I upgraded to 10.5.5, and X11 broke, seemingly never to be
repaired.
I have since repaired permissions, upgraded to Xquartz-2.3.1, & done
everything suggested, to no avail. I will (out of necessity) revert back to
10.4.11 if this can't be fixed. I liked some Leopard features, such as Spaces
and launchd, but I can live without them if necessary.
From things you've said earlier, it really does sound like something in
your user environtment that might be messing things up (something that
is sourced during your login process, a .profile, .bashrc, something).
I'd recommend creating a fresh new user, don't customize the login
environment at all, and try logging in as that user and see how many of
these problems follow.
