I have to say I find the Mighty Mouse (that came with my iMac)
surprisingly usable for 3-button X apps. I'd still rather Apple just
admitted they were wrong about the one-button thing all along and
separated the darn things on the outside, and I will never understand
how people can use the 4th or 5th buttons without hitting them
accidentally all the time. But in 3-button mode it works great. And
the scroll-nubbin isn't really a wheel, so you scroll-wheel haters
might not even mind it. I rarely need the one-finger horizontal
scrolling functionality, but when I do, it's phenomenally useful.
I also have one and love it. I use the mini trackball on both axis all
the time. It appears to be the same ball used on Blackberry phones. And
despite the fact that i have a cat (the ball will swallow tons of cat
hair and clog up), it has been very reliable. I use a microfiber dust
cloth to wind cat hair out of it, and from time to time, alcohol on a
clean paper napkin is used to loosen up other crud that will find its
way inside.
I don't use the side buttons (4 and 5 button) for the reason you
mention. This mouse actually has no buttons as such, but relies on
finger contact at the points where buttons would actually be. As a
three-button mouse with trackball it's been great.
