Also, if you could figure out what version of the server introduced the change, that would help. Just download the X11.bin from:
http://static.macosforge.org/xquartz/downloads/SL/
decompress it, and replace XQuartz.app/Contents/MacOS/X11.bin with the updated version.
I'd suggest trying the latest 1.6.x version (X11.bin-1.6.5-apple4) as a starting point for the regression testing. If that doesn't work, try the latest 1.5.x
I'm curious if this is related to the display layout change notification handling... nobody mentioned this in rc1. If that's the cause, then I'd expect:
1.5.3-apple20 - work
1.6.5-apple4 - fail
1.6.5-apple3 - work (but have windows confined bug)
1.7.5 - work (but have windows confined bug)
Also, the system.log should reveal if the displays were reconfigured around the time you experienced the bug.
