I did think of it, yes. But this won't help if X11.app itself still has focus on the OS X level, which at least in my case it does. (Or used to; Lion has an annoying menu bar update bug that makes it harder for me to be certain these days.) The focus within X11 is left dangling though, so there's no point in the equivalent check.
(Hm, or is there? Harder to be certain that it's dangling; maybe I'll write a little something to watch focus events.)
Might still be worth doing the Aqua-level one anyway, I guess, although the implication then is that it's even more complex if some people are seeing focus changes at the Aqua level and others (i.e. me) aren't....
