Ok... color me very embarrassed....
Looks like it simply takes forever for Xquartz to initialize itself the
first time it runs. It just looks like it's hanging. This time around,
I left it hanging while I looked around at logs and stuff, and by the
time I came back, I noticed that the xserver had started up, and an icon
had appeared in the dock. There were some log entries along the lines of:
Feb 15 20:52:59 new-host-3 login[3175]: USER_PROCESS: 3175 ttys000
Feb 15 20:53:03 new-host-3

but is insecure. It has been moved into /tmp/.X11-unix-FZ4am2yd

Subesquent startups are a lot faster, with log entries that look like this:
Feb 15 21:07:42 new-host-3 org.macosforge.xquartz.startx[4982]: xauth:
file /Users/mfidelman/.serverauth.4983 does not exist
Feb 15 21:07:42 new-host-3 org.macosforge.xquartz.startx[4982]:
Feb 15 21:07:42 new-host-3 org.macosforge.xquartz.X11.stub[5055]:
Xquartz: Unable to locate waiting server: org.macosforge.xquartz.X11
Feb 15 21:07:42 new-host-3 org.macosforge.xquartz.X11.stub[5060]:
Xquartz: Starting X server:

Feb 15 21:07:44 new-host-3 org.macosforge.xquartz.startx[4982]:
/opt/X11/bin/xinit: XFree86_VT property unexpectedly has 0 items instead
of 1
And, just to confirm, I logged out and back in - and it still comes up
quickly.
Maybe it had to build the font cache or something the first time around.
As I say... color me embarrassed.

I'd appreciate it if you could report what your problems were with 2.7.4. It's really easy to actually disable 2.7.4 and go back to 2.3.6 (just a single launchctl command and relog) if you get into trouble, but I'd like to make sure that we figure out what the problem is.
Happy to, but can you give me a little guidance as to what to look for (I'm not that familiar with the innards of X - mostly use Mac for desktop GUI, command line linux on servers; occasionally pop open an X-window to run server-side stuff that wants to open a GUI - but never had that much need to learn the ins and outs of X).
The short form of the last go-around:
- installed 2.7.4 from the package
- logged out and in
- tried opening an xterm from a terminal window - the command hung, and it didn't look like the x server even tried to start up
- tried ssh -X to a remote server, the session hung before connecting
So, before I try the install again, what kinds of things should I look for to report back (log entries, diagnostic commands)?
1) Try just running XQuartz.app directly. Does that work? If not, what happens?
2) Anything interesting in /var/log/system.log ?
3) Anything interesting in ~/Library/Logs/X11 ?
