This time around, I left it hanging while I looked around at logs and stuff, and by the time I came back, I noticed that the xserver had started up, and an icon had appeared in the dock. There were some log entries along the lines of:

This(^^) one is puzzling. Do you know how /tmp/.X11-unix was created on your system before this?

This(^^) looks like an issue with SpotLight not having indexed XQuartz.app.

And because it couldn't find XQuartz.app, it gives up (quits ^^), so launchd tries again (vv)

^^ Eventually, SpotLight found XQuartz.app and updated its index, so it could be discovered and launched by the stub.
> Feb 15 21:07:44 new-host-3 org.macosforge.xquartz.startx[4982]: /opt/X11/bin/xinit: XFree86_VT property unexpectedly has 0 items instead of 1
^^ benign

Yep. It looks like SpotLight took a while to update its index. I don't know why that is, sorry ... but Snow Leopard is an old cat at this point, and I haven't heard of an issue like that before, so I'm going to just suggest that you report back if you see that kind of issue happen on Mountain Lion.

Nope. That's done at the end of the install.
> As I say... color me embarrassed.
Well, it *should* have worked the first time anyway.
Thanks for reporting back.
