what is stopping you from closing most of them and using the equivalent "Smart Group" and "Detail View" listings in the main editor window?

1. The smart groups are out of focus most of the time. I have to explicitly scroll to them.

Everything's a trade off. You said you have a 19" monitor. Obviously you'd like the freedom to choose between the two things you're trading off: the need to scroll to the smart groups vs. the alternative of having to have share the screen space between an editor window and a second window and the need to switch back and forth between them.

As I said, I'd rather skip right over that trade off because neither option appeals to me. So for me it means using the attached editors; no need to deal with smart groups, nor detail view, nor any need to switch back repeatedly between main editor and utility windows.

2. The detail view takes away precious space from my editor window. I don't like it. (*)

I don't like it either. That's why I adjust the splitter up to very near the top.

3. The computer should adjust to the user, not the user to the computer. I don't see why Xcode should be an exception from this rule.

Agreed. Although as an aside, when you do a survey of pro tools, you see that the more a particular tool ascends into the "professional" domain (for example, Photoshop, FinalCut Pro, Xcode etc), the more likely it is that the user will have to become an "expert" in learning the program's idiosyncrasies and adjusting to them. By this I mean that the way the program works may not always be the most intuitive or self-evident.

Compare that to an app at the other end of the spectrum like iMovie, which neither requires a manual nor a support mailing list!

I want _one_ main editor window and utility windows (or panes or whatever) for additional tasks.

Most likely you'll get exactly that in 2.0. I imagine they'll add a checkbox in the preferences for "Include attached editor in [ ] window", seeing as so many people are complaining about the darn things.

(*) Xcode 1.5 has the habit of (re-)opening the detailview without my request. I'll file that as a bug, too.

Hasn't happened to me.

Cheers
Greg
