Obviously you'd like the freedom to choose between the two things you're trading off

No. I don't want to make any trade offs because it isn't necessary on my monitor. But Xcode 1.5 doesn't allow that configuration.

What I want:
a) The editor (ANY editor) in the middle of my screen. It's a big screen. I don't like looking at the edges when writing code.
_AND_
b) Additional windows, like build, debugging etc. visible beside the editor. There is enough room on my screen.

Now with Xcode 1.5 I can _either_ have a) (all windows on top of each other in the middle of the screen) _or_ b) (build window on the side and the attached editor with it) but not both. And I can see no good reason why it has to be that way.

So for me it means using the attached editors;

That's fine. If you like the attached editors, I have no problems with it. But they are still inconvenient for me.

By this I mean that the way the program works may not always be the most intuitive or self-evident.

It hasn't to be intuitive. But it has to be efficient and convenient. And it is not.

(*) Xcode 1.5 has the habit of (re-)opening the detailview without my request. I'll file that as a bug, too.

Hasn't happened to me.

Just select a target in the project tree.

I keep the detail view completely closed usually. Maybe if I could have the detail view _below_ the editor, I wouldn't mind it so much. But I think I'd rather have a separate window for that. Or at least a "Close Detail View" command and toolbar button (with the possibility to create a key binding).
