Yes, but not extensively, and I can't change that anyway.

And my question is serious: would adding several more GB help xCode
any?  Activity monitor shows xCode as #1 in the virtual memory column,
at 475 MB, but its only been running a few hours.

Lots of memory will certainly help with any processes launched by the XCode IDE.
I've encountered command line (make-based) builds where gcc have used several
giga bytes for template-based C++ code. (Boost - Spiritbased parsers)
