All I can say is: you have very different expectations than I do.

Actually, the build system isn't bad in XCode - means, it doesn't add
much overhead.
Compared to the make phase of a, say darwinports package, Xcode's build
process is **much** faster than a comparable make phase for a package.
In Xcode, the time taken will be dominated by the gcc compiler and the
system.
