Handy for save file dialogs, but it's not an option for open file dialogs.

It is. Try it. But you'll have to try in an app that uses NSOpenPanel,
not Nav Services. Seems this is yet another one of those annoying
Carbon/Cocoa UI differences. :(

Ah, so it's a hidden feature that doesn't even exist in many applications. Can't get more obvious than that. ;-)
