Yeah I'd like an update on this.
Today I received an answer from HP who told me to choose their HP
Color LaserJet 5500 CMYK profile as CMYK Default Profile in ColorSync
Utility > Preferences.
Under Panther, the only thing I've found so far that use these settings
are the included AppleScripts. You can set Adobe applications to use
them as working spaces, but they don't get used automatically or by
default by anything other than the AppleScripts (so far). Has anyone
found otherwise?
Even if it did, I find it strange to configure the settings for a
specific printer by changing the Default Profile.
Nope, they're supposedly source profiles according to the description
of the window; yet they seemingly aren't used by any app unless
specifically written to do so, including Apple's own applications. And
there is even a "Match to CMYK" AppleScript that uses CMYK Default as a
destination profile, which all the more makes the ColorSync
Preferences>Default profiles window description all the more misleading
(or just plain wrong, take your pick).
I'll keep you informed.
Thanks.
