Today I got a new answer from HP, essentially saying this:

Choosing between specific color profiles must be done through the preferences section in the ColorSync Utility. Hewlett Packard has no control with the way the ColorSync Utility is designed since Apple created it. We recommend contacting Apple for further information.

<Sigh>

Seems there's no way to apply color management to HP LaserJet printers... :-(

I still don't understand what ColorSync Utility > Devices > Color LaserJet 5500 should be for, if not for calibrating the printer...

Is anybody from Apple on this list who could comment?
