Any delay in drawing to the display has been deemed unacceptable by the
majority of users. Keep in mind that everything would have to be
matched -- the menu bar, UI widgets, the Dock, etc. We are exploring
new options for improving performance for Tiger.
Converting seemed an improper step, since that does touch the data,
whereas simply tagging the data can be easily undone.

Any Mac that's powerful enough to provide a pleasant user experience
under Panther is powerful enough to match images to the display.
Instead, for display only, untagged RGB images are assumed to be in
the display space already. When printing and saving as PDF, Generic
RGB is assigned.
So the print won't match the display?
Wouldn't it make more sense to convert from display space to Generic
RGB at save or print, and tag accordingly? (Though not as much sense
as assigning sRGB, and matchng to the display, from the gitgo.)
