While it is true that I can specify an RGB profile for the LaserJet in ColorSync Utility the Color LaserJet actually always uses the CMYK profile, no matter whether I print RGB or CMYK docs, and there is no way to tell it to do otherwise.

Are you performing color management at the application level or the system level (yuk)?

The system level, of course. This is one of the great features of Mac OS X that finally gets this right (at least in theory ;-) ). I mean, performing color management on the "application level" (usually a bashful description for using Adobe apps) makes as much sense architecturally as using dedicated printer drivers for each application you want to print from.

This was in the 1980ies; now we have 2007 ...

I just select the Laserjet profile in the print dialog of the (Adobe) application that I am printing from.

Ah, I knew the word "Adobe" would be mentioned. :-)

Somehow, Adobe has managed to get a monopoly in people's heads. Read something about color management and you read about how to do this in an Adobe app.

Adobe is even worse than Microsoft when it comes to ignoring Mac OS X technology and standards. I use Mac OS X for a reason, so I generally refuse to use apps like Adobe's that really destroy the old Unix ideal of a computer system that consists of many small, well- integrated components.

So a big focus of the review I'm preparing will be how to use color management in Mac OS X generally, beyond anything Adobe.

InDesign requires that one select "Composite RGB" from the Output tab for this. How are you doing it?

I specify the printer profile in ColorSync Utility. CMYK is listed as the default driver for the HP Color LaserJet which suggests you could also select RGB, but actually you can't. I thought that was an issue with HP's PPD, but if it isn't, I will check with Apple where the problem is.

What application(s) are you printing from?

TIFFany, Pages, Preview, SketchUp, Intaglio, OmniGraffle, MLayout, iCalamus, Mathematica, TextEdit, whatever ... it really shouldn't matter.
