The system level, of course.
OK, you really should have specified this in your initial question.
There are different things to discuss when profiling the same device
that will be color managed by the application, system or RIP. Doing
this at the system level is very uncommon and you didn't even specify
what system you were using in your initial question.
From my experience, ColorSync simply won't give you the quality and
control you are looking for. You must seek an application or RIP
based route.
This is one of the great features of Mac OS X that finally gets
this right (at least in theory ;-) ).
Only in theory as you are beginning to discover.
I mean, performing color management on the "application
level" (usually a bashful description for using Adobe apps) makes
as much sense architecturally as using dedicated printer drivers
for each application you want to print from.
[opening up a can of worms] In the mid nineties I think we all spent
a lot of time thinking about wether color management should take
place at the system, application or RIP level for our own particular
workflow. Application level color management has become so incredibly
popular simply because Adobe has given us such great control over all
the little details that we need (black point compensation, rendering
intent, proofing, etc).
So a big focus of the review I'm preparing will be how to use color
management in Mac OS X generally, beyond anything Adobe.
So, are you specifically interested in ColorSync's color management
capabilities? A complete review of using color management in OS X
would have to include the specific capabilities of various
applications, RIPs, drivers and plug-ins right? ColorSync is just a
piece of the larger color management pie.
