The system level, of course.
OK, you really should have specified this in your initial question.
I thought the fact that I'm asking this in a ColorSync list would
make this perfectly clear. ;-)
Doing this at the system level is very uncommon
That's what Apple is trying to change, and I want to support that.
Architecturally, it seems the only reasonable thing to do in the long
run. Also, it supports the creation of innovative, small apps that
don't have to do much to support a color management workflow;
innovation can only profit from that.
and you didn't even specify what system you were using in your
initial question.
We *are* in the Apple ColorSync list, are we? ;-)
From my experience, ColorSync simply won't give you the quality and
control you are looking for. You must seek an application or RIP
based route.
I'm simply not interested in that. Many of the apps various people
need color managed will never have a color management of their own,
and it's against the whole Mac OS X approach. I'm interested in
reviewing what Mac OS X, together with dedicated hardware and
software, is capable of doing today.
This is one of the great features of Mac OS X that finally gets
this right (at least in theory ;-) ).
Only in theory as you are beginning to discover.
Not necessarily. I ran into lots of issues, that's true, but I don't
see how most of them are related to system level color management. In
fact, not being able to use the Color LaserJet printer with an RGB
driver might be the first issue at all that's system level specific.
Shortcomings of the measurement hardware and the accompanying
software certainly are not, and these have posed much bigger problems
for me. And if there are system level issues, now is a good time to
make sure they will be fixed in Leopard. :-) Of course, nobody will
report those bugs if nobody uses system level color management ...
Application level color management has become so incredibly popular
simply because Adobe has given us such great control over all the
little details that we need (black point compensation, rendering
intent, proofing, etc).
So let's Apple encourage to do the same with Mac OS X, and everybody
will win. Besides, none of the points you actually mention is
something Mac OS X can't do today.
So, are you specifically interested in ColorSync's color management
capabilities?
Yes.
A complete review of using color management in OS X would have to
include the specific capabilities of various applications, RIPs,
drivers and plug-ins right?
I don't necessarily think so. No review can cover everything, and
color management in OS X is just that: *in OS X*. Of course I'll
review the software that comes with the measurement devices, and
after partly being quite disappointed by that, I have decided I will
also include additional software offerings from other companies that
help setting up the color management correctly.
But as far as the *usage* of color management (once it's set up
correctly) is concerned, the focus will be on what will work with
every OS X app (at least every Cocoa app).
Bye
Uli
