For now. One thing that finally occurred to me this morning is that Apple is now free to leverage OS X technologies to extend WebObjects (I'm thinking Java wrappers using native calls into functionality in CoreImage etc. ). If they did that, at least those portions would only run on OS X.

This is what worries me, too.

It seems to me that there are (at least) three main constituencies for WO. One is Apple itself. The second is folks who work in the IT dept of a company that builds WO apps for it's own internal use. And the third is service providers who are trying to sell WO solutions to their clients.

For Apple this change makes perfect sense. They can now add new features to WO at will, without worrying if they are using something that won't be available on WIndows. For the IT guys it's not great, and some companies may take this as the final nail in the coffin and ditch WO for something else, but a fair number of them will be ok because their apps are important enough to the company that they will fork over the $$$ for the XServes. For the rest of us, though, this is a little scary.

The bottom line, I think, is that Apple is basically giving WO away for free now because they don't care if they have users outside of Apple or not. We're welcome to keep using it if we wish, but they are going to focus on improving it in ways that suit their own needs. There's really nothing wrong with that decision, especially if it wasn't selling well anyway, but it does make life harder out here.

My company has not yet "gone WO", though we are seriously considering it, and this is going to make us think several times more and take a good look at the options. I really don't expect to find any options that we like as much as WO, unfortunately.
