Um, no. That tech note is from 2001. There is no more java bridge, at
least not when your app is running. I think EOModeler and WOBuilder et
al might still use it.

I'm not certain that straight JDBC would help you. IIRC, you don't
+require+ a plugin either -- though that would certainly solve the
problem. Have you looked at changing the data type and/or not using
UPPER?
