I thought the OS is just rendering at @2x and scaling the whole screen down?

Anyway, when talking about resolution independence, we should discern between 'the theoretically correct way' and 'the way it currently works'.

Theoretically, one point should always measure 1/72 inch [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point_(typography)].
Practically, on computer screens, that is almost never true.
