How widespread is support for BigTIFF? Does Argyll support it? I know Photoshop doesn't....

Not at present, but it's just a matter of compiling in the next version of the library and
turning the right compile flags on.
Our experience is that BigTIFFs written with current versions of LibTIFF
are not necessarily readable with current versions of Photoshop....
There is an experimental and apparently no longer actively develloped
BIGtiff plugin for Photoshop which reads some BigTIFs Photoshop doesn't
like:

All in all my impression is that BigTIFF compatibility is not exactly
widespread and mature ...
My hope (and up to now limited, but positive experience) is that
ImageMagick's PSB support is the more robust way to deal with big files.
