Hi there,

My apologies for sounding rude, but I'm a bit concerned. As I
mentioned in the past, I can appreciate your desire to push forward as
quickly as possible. Unfortunately, I feel as if you're venturing down
the same road as many of the other, more common, WebObjects sites out
there.
I'm not sure that what Dov has done is really that problematic.
From where I sit, in order for there to be community collaboration (as
you and many desire) there needs to be something to contribute to
(i.e., a common place of submission and a common point of reference for
for all involved).
All I see that Dov has done is fulfil the above (initial) requirements
by setting up the whywebobjects.com url with a basic infrastructure for
that desired collaboration to occur.
The layout of the site is not set in concrete. It can be adjusted over
time - so your summary of things is not in jeopardy. It will (or
something similar will) happen with continued community support and as
community discussions continue to fine-tune the site.
I don't see any cause for grave concern over the "look 'n' feel" of the
initial site. It's not as yet meant to be ready for prime time
marketing purposes. The initial goal needs simply to be having a common
point of collaboration (that is not this mailing list).
That being said, it seems to me to be a good idea to additionally have
a email@hidden mailing list of some kind to continue on
with the discussion of the site's contents/features/etc.
First, I've been on this list for over a year and nobody has mentioned
doing this type of thing. Last week I proposed the idea and began
doing research. Before I knew it, you jumped in, grabbed a domain
name,
for which you were initially grateful :-)
and started building the site. So, while it may sound like I am
whining about it, I would like to state that I think it's a bit rude
that you pretty much just started building and completely ignored the
guy that started it all.
Again, I don't think Dov has done that. I don't think it was clear that
you were interested in heading up the whole venture either but that
this all came up because of people wondering what's happenin' with WO.
So I don't see that Dov has gone behind your back, so to speak.
What was clear was the 'what do people think' queries - where many
contributed. Someone suggested asking those of various sites (including
conviveon) to host such a site - to which Dov came back quickly with a
"Yes we will" and has proceeded to put the foundations in place (i.e.,
domain name and opportunity for contribution by any).
If you are going to go off and build the site without listening to the
group as a whole, then, in my opinion, don't bother. If you are going
to release anything that does not cosmetically look highly professional
then, again, don't bother.
Seriously, I can't see the need for alarm bells. Someone had to go
about setting up an initial site. But its look, design, etc are not set
in stone - they merely provide a starting point. I for one see that as
a positive...
As several people on the site so eloquently
put it, if it's just going to be another WebObjects site, then we (or
you) are wasting the time in creating it. As mostly everyone pointed
out, what we have been discussing is no simple challenge; it must be
done correctly and professionally the first time out of the gate.
Rather, it must be marketed 'at the right time'. Collaboration need not
occur in secret until that time. Many open source projects have humble
beginnings. This in no way limits their potential. Indeed what will
attract contributors is the opportunity to be involved in something
that has potential and people with talent behind it.
The only reason why it would fail is if no one seeks to contribute and
if its future direction is not guided by the community and/or a
community encouraged committee and if arguments break out about who
started what...
In short, the opinions of the mass are more important,
Agreed. Remember your contribution to the masses has been appreciated.
Let's not turn this into a competition...
with regards,
