I'd certainly like to forget that there's a detail view. I've *never* used it. I'm not happy about the fact that the split view divider can't be hidden (as it could in 1.1), and wastes 9 pixels of editor space. Having the detail view launch a full-scale invasion every time I examine a target is thoroughly annoying.

Workaround until Apple fixes the bug: instead of closing the detail view fully, leave a tiny bit of it showing. This prevents the "invasion".

Another bug related to the detail view (and this is definitely a bug and not a usage preference issue):

1. Editor window is split into two parts: (small) detail view and (large) editing area.
2. User "splits" the editor. The size of the detail view remains the same. The editing area is split into two equal parts.
3. User removes split from editor. The detail view grows to occupy the space that was previously occupied by the upper editor.
4. At end the editor window is still split into two parts, but now we have a large detail view and a small editing area.

It seems quite clear that if a user does a split followed by a split removal that the window's end state should be the same as its beginning state. Thanks to the detail view growing that's clearly not the case.

I split my editors under Project Builder quite often, but under Xcode I rarely do it at all because of this annoying behaviour.
